Abstract
The purpose of the research was to compile and organize the historical data regarding the evolution of the physical education teaching program nationally and compare it to the evolution of the physical education teaching program at California State University, Sacramento, from the 1947 to 1982. The sources of data were the California State University, Sacramento catalogs, library, archived collections, worldwide web, interviews with CSUS faculty, periodicals and journals related to education and physical education. The results of the research confirm the similarities in evolution of physical education in the areas of standardization and specialization of course work, the
influence of legislation, the separation of physical education departments from athletics, and the combining of men's and women's departments of physical education into one. The research also revealed tensions between the noncoaching and coaching faculty of physical education at California State University, Sacramento.
