Abstract
The purpose of this project is to present a synopsis of the history of how addicts and alcoholics have been dealt with in the United States, consider the current state of services for this population, establish the need for early intervention with the 12 steps of Alcoholics Anonymous, and present a DVD containing a “Contemporary Doctor’s Opinion”. The source of data is mainly from existing literatures and reviews of literature in research by professionals and practitioners in subjects of alcoholism, addiction, treatment, recovery and studies on Alcoholics Anonymous. Additionally, Dr. Mark Popil offered his experience as a medical doctor, addiction specialist and recovering alcoholic. This project takes the original Doctor’s Opinion from the book Alcoholics Anonymous first published in April of 1939, and provides a current and relevant opinion based on today’s medical science as a foundation for 12 step recovery. This DVD is critical information in not only clearly setting out the problem of addiction, but in its setting up of a solution to the problem.
