Abstract
This research project expands on the original work on resistor averaging by Kattman and Barrow [1] and its optimization by Pan and Abidi [2] by proposing for the first time, interpolation and resistor averaging using active resistors in a 6 bit flash ADC to achieve smaller area and power with comparable performance to previous work via extensive simulations. The active resistor technique used here allows the resistor values to be adjusted as needed, either individually or all together. A track-and-hold amplifier (THA) and flash ADC core comprising of preamplifiers and comparators were designed and simulated using a top down approach. At a conversion rate of 1 GS/s, the simulated circuit achieves 6 effective bits.
