Abstract

DACA English as a second language Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program English Language Learners School psychologists Noncitizen children Undocumented students
Through various changes in legal policy and political climate, undocumented students face unique challenges due to their legal status. As such, these challenges can create disruption in both their academic and social-emotional functioning. This training was created in an effort to provide school psychologists with tools to best support undocumented students and their families. This training details the history of undocumented students, including landmark legal cases such as Plyer v. Doe and more recent policies such as the Dream Act and DACA. Further, this training details the social-emotional and academic impacts of prolonged stress and anxiety that can arise from status-related stressors in students. This training is designed to be a collaborative tool in order to improve the practice between current school psychologists and undocumented students and their families in order to create and maintain a safe and inclusive environment.
