Abstract
A 23-year-old patient with left shoulder pain was seen for physical therapy treatment for six sessions starting April 2, 2014 to May 7, 2014 in an outpatient clinic under the supervision of a licensed physical therapist. The patient was evaluated at the initial encounter with postural assessment, range of motion, manual muscle tests, special tests for the shoulder complex, pain intensity using the Numeric Pain Rating Scale, and function using the Disabilities of Arm, Shoulder and Hand questionnaire, after which a plan of care was established. Main goals for the patient were to perform all activities of daily living (ADL) pain free, understand the source of his pain, and be able to participate in sports activities pain free. Main interventions used were neuromuscular re-education, strength training, manual therapy and mental imagery. The patient achieved his goals of pain free ADLs and understanding the origin of his shoulder pain. The patient was discharged understanding the need to continue working on his motor control through practice and his home exercise program prior to full participation in pain free sports activities.
