Abstract

This multi-disciplinary research study investigates the effects of music-based auditory training on music perception, enjoyment, and quality of life for cochlear implant (CI) users. Focusing on postlingual adults, the study employs a familiar piece of music alongside independent attentive listening exercises across three auditory training sessions. Despite the profound hearing loss that leads to CI use, where traditional hearing aids are insufficient, the device’s ability to convert sound waves into electrical signals directly stimulating the auditory nerve – termed electric hearing – offers renewed auditory experiences. However, challenges persist, especially in complex listening environments. This study aims to enhance auditory perception and quality of life by capitalizing on music’s rehabilitative potential to engage and refine auditory processing through structured training. Previous findings suggest a need for interventions that have the potential to enrich CI users’ musical engagement and overall auditory satisfaction, which also supports the development of new, tailored auditory training approaches within the scope of audiology practice.
