Abstract
A 31-year-old female with complaints of left ankle instability 4 years post 5th metatarsal fracture was seen in a pro bono clinic once a week for 4 weeks by a student physical therapist under the supervision of a licensed physical therapist. The patient was evaluated at the initial encounter with manual muscle tests (MMTs), single leg stance (SLS), and the patient-specific functional scale (PSFS) and a plan of care was established to address moderate weakness in the left plantar flexors and bilateral hip abductors and hip external rotators, decreased single limb stance time, and inability to run and participate in yoga classes. Main goals for the patient were to increase strength in her lower extremities, increase stability in her left ankle, increase ability to go downstairs confidently, and increase her confidence for exercise so that she may participate in yoga, running, and general exercise. Main interventions used were strength training, stretching, and functional training. At the end of the 4-week clinic, the patient was able to increase her SLS goal and was able to increase her confidence with stairs and overall exercise. The patient did not achieve her goals in increasing hip strength and plantar flexor strength MMTs and PSFS scores. The patient was discharged home to be independent with her home exercise program.
