Abstract
A patient with mechanical neck pain due to cervical derangement was seen for physical therapy treatment for 10 sessions for 6 weeks by a student physical therapist at an outpatient physical therapy clinic under the supervision of a licensed physical therapist. The patient was evaluated at the initial encounter with the Numeric Pain Rating Scale, postural observation, universal goniometer, Deep Neck Flexor Endurance Test, Patient-Specific Functional Scale, patient report, and Neck Disability Index. A plan of care was established to address neck pain, postural deviations, decreased cervical active range of motion, decreased deep neck flexor muscular endurance, and decreased ability to socialize with friends and family on Zoom and gaming platforms or to garden for longer than 30 minutes. The main goals for the patient were to decrease pain, increase cervical muscular endurance and range of motion, improve posture, and return to previous ability to socialize with friends and family and to garden. Main interventions used were repeated motions and patient education based on the McKenzie Method, as well as, impairment-based training. The patient achieved all of their goals and was discharged to be independent in their home.
