Abstract
A patient with cervicalgia or neck pain was seen for physical therapy treatment for 6 weeks from 6/11/19 to 7/18/19 at Monterey Spine and Joint Physical Therapy. Services were performed by a student physical therapist under the supervision of Carey-Leah Havrilko PT, DPT. The patient was evaluated at the initial encounter with the Numeric Pain Rating Scale, Visual Assessment, Universal Goniometry, Manual Muscle Test, Posterior-to-Anterior Spring Test, Deep Neck Flexor Test, Upper Limb Tension Test A, and the Neck Disability Index. A plan of care was established to address increased pain, abnormal posture, decreased range of motion, decreased muscle strength, and decreased muscle endurance. Main goals for the patient were to decrease pain, increase muscle strength, increase muscle endurance, and improve his ability to sit, drive, and sleep for prolonged periods of time all without pain. Main interventions used were manual therapy, strength and endurance exercise, postural training, and patient education. The patient achieved the following goals of improving pain, posture, range of motion, strength, endurance, ability for prolonged sitting, driving, sleeping, efficiency at work, reading, and overall quality of life. The patient was discharged to home with a home exercise program.
