Abstract
A male patient with left subacromial shoulder impingement was seen for student physical therapy treatment for 12 sessions over a 6-week period at an outpatient physical therapy clinic under the supervision of a licensed physical therapist. The patient was evaluated at the initial encounter with goniometry, manual muscle testing, the Numeric Pain Rating Scale, the Shoulder Pain and Disability Index, and a cluster of diagnostic test to rule in subacromial impingement syndrome. A plan of care was established to address impaired left shoulder active range of motion, decreased left shoulder strength, and increased left shoulder pain. Main goals for the patient were to increase carrying capacity and return to participation in yardwork. Main interventions used were therapeutic exercise, manual therapy, cryotherapy modalities, and goal specific functional training. The patient achieved the goals related to range of motion, strength, shoulder function, increased carrying capacity, and return to full participation in yardwork. The patient was discharged home and given a home exercise program.
