Abstract
A patient 5-weeks post right knee arthroplasty was seen for student physical therapy treatment for 16 sessions over 8 weeks at an outpatient physical therapy clinic under the supervision of a licensed physical therapist. The patient was evaluated at the initial encounter with goniometry, manual muscle test, timed-up and go, 30 second sit-to-stand, Wells’ Criteria and a plan of care was established to address limited knee range of motion, strength, decreased walking endurance, difficulty navigating stairs, and dependent on assistive device for ambulation. Main goals for the patient were increasing walking endurance and ambulating with an assistive device. Main interventions used were functional strength training, dynamic balance exercises, and manual therapy. The patient achieved the goals of being able to ascend/descend stairs, ambulate in the community with a single point cane. The patient was discharged with a home exercise program.
