Abstract
A 40-year-old male with a right medial meniscal injury was seen in student physical therapy treatment for 10 out of 12 total visits at an outpatient clinic under the supervision of a licensed physical therapist. The patient was evaluated at the initial encounter with the numeric pain rating scale, goniometry, manual muscle testing, the lower extremity functional scale, and patient report. A 12-visit plan of care over the course of 12 weeks was established to improve pain, range of motion, lower extremity strength, standing, walking, squatting, kneeling, going up and down stairs, lifting/carrying, and work participation. The patient’s primary goal was return to full duty at work. The interventions used were cryostretching, static stretching, manual therapy, neuromuscular reeducation, progressive strength and task specific training. At follow-up, the patient had achieved the following long term goals: 0-2/10 pain on the numeric pain rating scale and 0-135 degree knee range of motion.
