Abstract
A patient with a suspected meniscal lesion of the right knee was seen for student physical therapy treatment for 6 sessions from April 3, 2014 to May 14, 2014 at the California State University, Sacramento Department of Physical Therapy orthopedic pro-bono clinic under the supervision of Edward Barakatt, PT, PhD. The patient was evaluated at the initial encounter with goniometry, manual muscle tests of strength, numeric pain rating scale, Lysholm Knee Scoring Scale, and the Knee Injury and Osteoarthritis Outcomes Scale (KOOS) and a plan of care was established. Main goals for the patient were to improve right knee range of motion, increase right knee extension and flexion strength and motor control, more effectively manage her symptoms, improve her tolerance for standing and negotiating stairs, and return to recreational physical activity. Main interventions used were manual therapy, modalities, patient education, behavior modification, progressive resistance training, balance exercises, and electronic biofeedback training. The patient achieved the following goals: improved right knee range of motion, command of effective management strategies for her symptoms, increased right knee extensor strength, and improved tolerance for functional activities. The patient was discharged to home with continued outpatient physical therapy at another clinic.
