Abstract
A 50-year-old patient with recurrent low back pain was seen for 16 sessions over 8 weeks for outpatient physical therapy. Treatment was provided by a physical therapist student under the supervision of a licensed physical therapist. The patient was evaluated at the initial encounter with Numeric Pain Rating Scale, goniometry, manual muscle tests, active straight leg raise test, Oswestry Disability Index, and selected special tests to rule in the use of lumbar manipulation. A plan of care was established to address pain, mobility, strength, motor control, and function to achieve patient goals of return to work, participation in theater activities, and performance of heavy housework. Main interventions used were manipulation, motor control and task specific training. After 16 visits, the patient achieved improvement in pain, mobility, strength, motor control, and function. The patient was discharged to remain at home, and independent in low back pain management.
