Abstract

Female patient case study Manual therapy Outpatient physical therapy Rotator cuff–related shoulder pain Shoulder rehabilitation Therapeutic exercise Therapy
A 61-year-old female patient with rotator cuff arthropathy of the right shoulder underwent physical therapy for 5 sessions over a 10-week outpatient period. The treatment was conducted by a student physical therapist under the direct supervision of a licensed physical therapist. The patient was evaluated at the initial encounter with postural observation, numeric pain rating scale (NPRS), goniometry, manual muscle test (MMT), shoulder pain and disability index (SPADI), patient specific functional scale (PSFS), Park et al. diagnostic cluster, and focus on therapeutic outcomes (FOTO). A plan of care was established to address right shoulder weakness, ROM, and restrictions with playing overhead sports. Main goals for the patient were to increase strength, ROM, and returning to pickleball. Main interventions used were therapeutic exercise and manual therapy. The patient achieved self-reported functional goals along with improvements in strength and ROM. The patient was discharged to continue living at home independently with a home exercise program.
