Abstract

Interventions Cultural awareness Depression, Mental School children Latin Americans Latinx Mental Health Psychology
Latinx students face a variety of barriers to attending US-based-schools, such as discrimination, acculturation-related stressors, cultural stigmas surrounding mental health, limited resources tailored explicitly to Latinx student, lack of Latinx representation amongst school employees, as well as school employees having a lack of awareness or knowledge surrounding both Latinx culture and on how to support students with mental health concerns. Consequently, these barriers and challenges can significantly and negatively impact their social, emotional, and academic growth. Following a review of the literature, the authors created a training in an attempt to provide school employees (principals, school psychologists, counselors, etc.) with the tools necessary to accurately detect and support Latinx students dealing with depression. This detailed training includes statistics about the Latinx student population, definitions of keywords utilized throughout the training, and information on why this topic is so crucial to address. The training will cover the importance of early detection and inclusive care in reducing or eliminating long-term adverse effects, promoting resilience, and enhancing social and academic outcomes for Latinx children. Furthermore, the training will also cover the importance of equipping school employees with culturally responsive tools, discussing systemic barriers to ensure equitable mental health support, and fostering a healthy and collaborative relationship between the schools and the families. Finally, this training will suggest evidence-based, culturally-tailored and modified therapeutic interventions like Family-Based approaches and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy to support Latinx students.
