Abstract
A 74-year-old female patient status post right total knee arthroplasty was seen for physical therapy in the acute care setting for four treatment sessions over three days, starting the same day as surgery. At initial evaluation the patient was assessed with goniometry, manual muscle testing, the Numeric Pain Rating Scale, the Wells Score for deep vein thrombus, and the Activity Measure for Post-Acute Care. Goals established for the patient included improving range of motion, strength, functional mobility, and to decrease pain. The interventions used were therapeutic exercise and task specific training, as well as education and use of durable medical equipment. The patient improved in range of motion, strength, functional mobility, and pain level. The patient was discharged home with an outpatient physical therapy appointment and a home exercise program to follow.
