Abstract
A patient with hypotonic cerebral palsy and ataxia was seen in an outpatient physical therapy clinic for 12 sessions over the course of 8 weeks. Treatment was provided by a student physical therapist under the supervision of a licensed physical therapist. The patient was evaluated using the Gross Motor Function Measure-66, Gross Motor Function Classification System, Peabody Developmental Motor Scales-2, 10- Meter Walk Test, 2-Minute Walk Test, and observational gait analysis. The goals for the patient were to improve lower extremity strength, improve balance, increase walking endurance, improve functional mobility, and facilitate independent ambulation. A plan of care was established to address impairments found at each level of the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health. Interventions included functional strengthening and progressive treadmill and overground ambulation. The patient improved lower extremity strength, functional independence, balance, and achieved independent ambulation. The patient was discharged to continue living at home with her parents, who were educated on the progression for her home exercise program.
