Abstract
A patient with a left total hip arthroplasty was seen for inpatient physical therapy treatment for 6 treatment sessions in a 4-day period. Treatment was performed by a student physical therapist under the supervision of a licensed physical therapist. The patient was evaluated at the initial encounter with the Visual Analogue Scale for pain, Manual Muscle Test, Wells Criteria, 10 meter walk test, 6-Clicks, and Modified Iowa Level of Assistance Scale. A plan of care was established to address left hip pain, left lower extremity weakness, deep vein thrombosis risk, impaired gait speed, and limited functional mobility. Main goals for the patient were to reduce pain, improve strength, prevent deep vein thrombosis, increase gait speed, improve ability to perform activities of daily living, and be discharged to home with home health. Main interventions used were patient education, task specific training, therapeutic exercise, and cryotherapy. The patient achieved the following goals of reducing pain, preventing deep vein thrombosis, increasing gait speed, and improving functional mobility. The patient was discharged to a skilled nursing facility for further physical rehabilitation.
