Abstract
The power system is evolving in complexity with the adoption of renewable energy systems, electric vehicles, and microgrids. This complexity will most likely increase the unbalanced current in the power system which causes more stress on the system and costs the utility more to mitigate the detrimental effects of an unbalanced power system. Currently there is no easy solution to mitigate the unbalanced current in the power system, but a solution based on Current's Physical Components (CPC) power theory is available that compensates unbalanced current. By enhancing this compensator to dynamically adjust to changing loads, unbalanced current from electric vehicle charging or weather patterns can be compensated. Several methods to adjust the compensator are discussed with selecting a simple method of switching banked capacitors or inductors to be used in simulation and testing of the compensator with the presence of unbalanced current due to electric vehicle charging.
