Abstract
Afterschool programs impact academic, behavioral, and psychological resilience in the children who participate (Borrero, Lee, & Padilla, 2012 and Halpren, 2002). Can these same programs impact the parents of the children who participate? How do parents view the impact of afterschool programs on themselves and their children? This study examined resilience from the parents’ view in three areas such as, academics, behaviors, and psychological processes. Resilience is the manifestation of positive developmental outcomes despite exhibiting a number of risk factors (Morales & Trotman, 2004; Morales, 2008; Sturtevant, 2014). Possible risk factors are living in poverty, having ethnic minority status, being educated in an under-resourced school in a historically-marginalized community, and being a multilingual student (Borrero, Lee, & Padilla, 2012 and Morales, 2008). The present study uses a mixed methods approach to evaluate an afterschool program called EdVenture from the parents’ point of view.
