Abstract
School bus transportation is among the safest modes of transportation. With over 26 million students riding on school buses in the United States alone, the National Safety council estimates that the average school bus accident rate is 0.01 per 100 million miles traveled. This chapter provides a general overview of the standards and regulations that address school bus transportation safety in the United States. Topics including safety around and inside the school bus, and research encompassing school bus safety topics such as emergency evacuations are discussed.
