Abstract
The author interviewed the summer internship coordinator, Obasi Dumasani Davis. He is nineteen years old and a sophomore at the University of Madison-Wisconsin, majoring in fashion design. He grew up in East Oakland, graduated from Berkeley High School, and was Oakland's Youth Poet Laureate in 2013. Obasi Davis recognizes that he is a role model in some respects: he is a successful college student who was born and raised in their same neighborhood. As the interview draws to a close and he reconnects with his students, the author sees the way his ethic of care permeates his classroom space. He watches him working with younger mentees. Obasi chuckles a bit as he gives the brothers in the African American Male Achievement family their tasks for the day. Although he does not consider himself a teacher per se, he seems to naturally guide the next generation to recognize their greatness.
