Abstract
Simone’s poem, A True Fighter, makes me think of Dereca Blackmon and her
reputation as a fierce activist and advocate for African-American youth. Her
status in the community and the reputation of Leadership Excellence excites
and intimidates me as I prepare for our first interview. I recall the many stories
I have heard over the years about Leadership Excellence. When I was in high
school, many of my friends participated in LE’s famous summer camp and
returned to school with a profound consciousness I admired. Now, nearly a
decade later, it’s 2005 and I am about to meet the executive director.
