Abstract
Literacy was considered a set of neutral and objective skills independent of social context or ideology. Good communication between the home and the school, right from the start of each new school year, is essential in any balanced and comprehensive literacy program. Because most educators are aware of the need for good communication, many schools provide several parent–teacher conference days when teachers are available to talk with parents and caregivers about students’ progress. Encourage parents to explore, with their children, the types of questions that extend and provoke critical and creative thinking; this will follow up the critical-thinking strategies that have been introduced in class. Home-school programs need to be nonthreatening and the activities enjoyable. Easy-to-use materials should be introduced to students in school first. To help families improve the literacy of all members, family literacy programs have evolved. Educational policies have promoted family literacy programs in schools and community-based organizations.
