In James Gillray’s 1791 print, ‘A Uniform Whig’ (see Fig. 6.1), Edmund Burke appears as an emblem of Inconsistency. His right arm rests on a pedestal featuring a bust of George III (who looks rather arrogantly at Burke); his right hand holds his recently publishedReflections on the Revolution in France(1790); the pockets on the right side of his body – which is covered in a gold-laced coat – are overflowing with coins (perhaps a government pension from George III).
