Abstract
This publication on best practices in crisis prevention and intervention is divided among the concepts of primary, secondary, and tertiary prevention. The introductory chapter examines crisis theory and establishes a foundation for the comprehensive crisis prevention and intervention team. It also attempts to bridge the gap between theory and crisis intervention. Section 2, "Primary Prevention: Preventing and Preparing for Crisis Events," presents chapters that address preventing and preparing for crises. Sections 3, "Secondary Prevention: The Immediate Response to Crisis Events," and 4, "Secondary Prevention: Responding to Specific Crises," present chapters containing information that can be useful when responding to crises. Section 5, "Tertiary Prevention: Long-Term Treatment of Traumatized Individuals," offers a review of long-term rehabilitation issues associated with crisis, trauma, and loss. Although the activities described in Section 5 may be beyond the scope of the school-based crisis team, the information is included to explain how long-term treatment may be warranted with posttraumatic stress disorders. The chapters in Section 6, "Special Issues in Crisis Prevention and Response," look at additional issues crucial for the response to a crisis. Chapters are included on crisis prevention and the legal and ethical issues. Ideas for future research are also presented. (Contains 5 appendixes, 19 figures, 40 tables, and over 1,000 references.)
